Adult Swim's Premier New Show of 2025 Earns a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family go about their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
