An Account of Unexpected Kindness: When a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Ground

During 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for a medical school interview. I figured I would book a place to stay after getting there, yet when I arrived, a big convention was in town and every single youth hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

Hailing from Singapore, I thought the possibility of spend the night at the terminal – only to discover the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate around the clock. With no idea how to proceed and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on public transport and began walking near a gaming venue, believing it was a place to spend the night somewhere that stayed open through the night. That wouldn’t put me at my peak for nailing an interview the next day, but as a broke student, I couldn’t afford.

We could all use more folks like that woman.

It seems I seemed lost as a young woman spotted me wandering around the city center and wondered whether I needed help. I recounted my situation and without hesitation she said I could crash on the floor in her student dorm at the Australian National University – which was perfect, as that’s where my medical school interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided some food: a leftover filled rolls she had from her part-time job. I had access to a hot shower and a secure location and safe to sleep.

With hindsight, it’s clear to me what a big chance she took as a woman allowing a male stranger she had only just encountered crash at her place. At that time I was in a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious to such safety concerns. As a dad now, I am astonished she took that chance – and remain very grateful.

I never did go to the Australian National University, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish life has repaid her generosity tenfold. The world needs more folks who show such kindness.
