Anthony Barry Shares The Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

A decade ago, the England assistant coach was playing in League Two. Now, he is focused supporting the England manager win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. The road from player to coach started through volunteering with the youth team. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He realized his destiny.

Rapid Rise

His advancement is incredible. Beginning with his first major job, he built a standing with creative training and excellent people skills. His stints with teams led him to top European clubs, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad across multiple countries. His players include legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, as part of Team England, he's fully immersed, the top in his words.

“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream and then you plan: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We have to build a systematic approach so we can for optimal success.”

Obsession with Details

Dedication, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Working every hour under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo test boundaries. The approach include psychological profiling, a plan for hot conditions for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and building a true team. He stresses “Team England” and rejects terms such as "break".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”

Ambitious Trainers

The assistant coach says along with the manager as extremely driven. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” he states. “We want to conquer the whole ground and we dedicate most of our time to. Our responsibility not just to keep up of changes but to beat them and innovate. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And to clarify complicated matters.

“We get 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We have to play a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. We need to progress from thought to data to understanding to action.

“To create a system that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ all the time available after our appointment. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships among them. We have to spend time communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”

World Cup Qualifiers

Barry is preparing ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and away to Albania. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This period to build on the team's style, to gain more impetus.

“We are both certain that the style of play must reflect all the positives about the Premier League,” he comments. “The athleticism, the versatility, the strength, the honesty. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive but comfortable to have on. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.

“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them a style that allows them to move and run like they do every week, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.

“You can gain psychological edges for managers in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, closing down early. But in the middle area on the field, that section, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data currently. They can organize – defensive shapes. Our aim is to speed up play through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

The coach's thirst for improvement is all-consuming. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious about the presentation, as his cohort included stars including former players. For self-improvement, he went into tough situations imaginable to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he coached prisoners for a training session.

He completed the course with top honors, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard included won over and he hired Barry to his team at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it was telling that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.

His replacement with the club took over, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on under Graham Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he recruited Barry from Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
