Both Deceased Students Named in the Providence Campus Incident as Police Continue Hunt for Killer.

Both young individuals who died in the weekend's tragic incident at Brown University had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their shooter persisted following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the only individual of interest in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was described as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a gathering on Sunday.

Cook was second-in-command of Brown’s branch of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also shared words of sorrow publicly, saying in part: “There are no words. Thinking of her kin and peers, particularly her mother and father.”

The Second Victim

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the Ivy League university, family members said.

The victim's identification was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. His ambitions were lofty of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and aiding others,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a memorial statement.

The Shooting Incident

Nine other people were wounded in Saturday’s attack in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Law enforcement reported by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-old male taken into custody in a police operation at a Hampton Inn about 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was released from custody.

“There is a killer at large,” stated Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you have to regroup and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last approximately one day.”

Public Fear

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “It is expected to provoke renewed concern for our public”.

The shooter discharged a weapon inside a room in the engineering building on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a police source informed the Associated Press.

Police that entered the lodging seized a pair of pistols and magazines when the suspect was taken into custody, according to reports.

Condition of the Injured

Among those wounded, one pupil was discharged from care, mentioned the university president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in serious yet stable state, and one remained in critical care, authorities stated on Sunday.

A private school, a private K-12 school in the city of Durham, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

Further Tributes

Tributes were paid to Cook at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at Brown she was an incredible light in that specific location as well.”

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she aided her club and peers,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the student's death in a statement. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, loved ones, and fellow students and lament the passing of his potential.”

National Context

The weekend's murders at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US college with about thousands of bachelor's and postgraduate students, took place amid one of at least 392 mass shootings documented across the United States so far in 2025, according to records. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
