California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028
Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he will decide on whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 elections conclude.
"Yes, I would be lying if I said no," the governor commented when questioned about seriously considering a White House bid after the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
The governor's tenure as California's leader ends in January 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he cautioned that any choice is still years away.
"It's up to destiny," he added.
Rising Profile as a Administration Opponent
Newsom has stepped forward as a notable opponent of the current federal leadership, using his social media accounts and pushing a initiative that would expand the party's House seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has made him a target from critics.
Clash on Transportation
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a weekend appearance on a major news network. The secretary revealed a strategy to cut federal funds from the state and suggested revoking the state's ability to grant commercial driver's licenses.
"I intend to cut $160 million from the state," he declared, following a recent fatal crash in California involving an non-citizen semi truck driver that led to loss of life and casualties.
His administration pointed out that the U.S. government had renewed the individual's authorization on several occasions, which permitted him to secure a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had before stated he was withholding $40m from California for failing to implement English language requirements for commercial drivers.
Strong Response from the Administration
"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand federal law," Newsom's office retorted in a recent comment addressing the funding warnings. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: California commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."
Public Opinion and Future Prospects
A recently conducted survey revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters said that Newsom should run for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has grown to an mean of 33.5% from previous levels, while his disapproval has fallen from an typical level of more than 40% to current figures.
In previous months, the governor stated while traveling several key regions that he had "no clue" about his plans for 2028.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.
"The idea that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, alone, remarkable," he said. "No one can say? I am eager to see who steps forward in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
