Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Recording That Sparked the Debate
The recorded message, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who previously served in military or defense roles.
"As we did, you all made an vow to protect and defend this founding document," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our governing document are not only from abroad, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can decline unlawful commands, you can reject improper directives, you have to decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow orders that contravene the legal system or our constitution."
The Former President's Angry Response
The video message reportedly trigger a angry response from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he declared: "This constitutes really bad, and Harmful to our Country. Their statements cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Officials Respond
Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership released a combined declaration denouncing the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no role in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who were featured in the video all worked our nation with great national pride and honor. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's appalling and risky death threats against congressional representatives, and urge House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to ensure the safety of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these unhinged social media posts and recant his violent rhetoric before he causes harm," the declaration stated.
Officials' Firm Response
The lawmakers who participated in the video also released a response.
"We identify as former service members and national security professionals who care for this nation and swore an pledge to defend and defend the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that sacred obligation."
"The significant point is that the ex-president views it punishable by capital punishment for us to repeat the legal requirements," they added. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their protection as they carry out their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "All citizens must come together and censure the former president's calls for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for principled stance."
Further Political Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on social media: "It's important to understand: the former president is calling for the execution of public representatives."
He continued: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."
The Conservative official justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have important representatives of the government instructing troops to defy commands, I think that is historic in US history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly informed journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the offense of treason" but that "attorneys have to analyze the wording and establish all that."
Administration Statement
During a White House press conference on that day, when questioned by a media member, "Is the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative replied: "No."
"We should understand about what the former president is reacting to," the representative declared. "You have active officials of the American legislature who coordinated to organize a video message to members of the American armed forces, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the president's proper directives."
She said: "The integrity of our defense system depends on the chain of command, and if that structure is broken, it can result in fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and that's what these members of Congress ... are basically promoting."
