Eurovision Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

A freshly coined acronym came to light a few months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is specific to Gaza, per insights from doctors like child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is unusual for doctors to attend to a minor who has seen the death of their whole family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of child amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal in scores of doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that atrocities are ongoing. Authorities rejects these claims, consistent with how it denies everything it is accused of. But while young survivors are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, we are told, is what unity looks like.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of a person in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. An institution that initially championed peace has now become a blatant mechanism to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
