New research suggests that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and you become ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
