Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 people perished and over 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
