Russian President Vladimir Putin Pledges Steady Oil Shipments to India in Defiance of American Demands
During a clear signal to Western nations, President Vladimir Putin informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to guarantee “unbroken” deliveries of energy resources to India. These remarks came when Putin and Modi met in New Delhi and declared their relationship were “resilient to outside influence.”
A Statement For the West
The statement, made on Friday, appeared to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, which have repeatedly attempted to compel New Delhi into reducing its historical links with Moscow. The context comes after earlier US actions, including additional trade penalties on India due to its buying of discounted Russian crude.
“Moscow remains a reliable supplier of oil and gas and anything required for the development of India’s industry,” the Russian president remarked. “Russia is prepared to persist in securing the steady flow of energy for the booming Indian economy.”
The Indian leader, without naming energy explicitly, echoed the theme by saying that “energy security has been a strong and vital cornerstone of the bilateral cooperation.”
Challenging US Interference
Prior to the meeting, during a TV appearance, Putin had challenged US interference on India's dealings with Russia. Putin stated, “If the US has the right to buy our atomic materials, how can you deny India enjoy the equivalent access?”
The visit represented his maiden journey to India after the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi undertook a deliberate effort to display that the bond between the two leaders remained intact.
An Unusual Reception
Taking an unusual step, the Indian PM met Putin upon his arrival. Both leaders embraced warmly as close allies before having a private dinner on Thursday evening.
Modi in his statement called India's partnership with Russia as “a guiding star” and said it was “founded on mutual respect and profound confidence.”
Reaffirming Strategic Cooperation
The bilateral summit resulted in multiple important deals regarding defence and economic cooperation. A major outcome was the signing of an strategic roadmap that runs to 2030, which targets to double mutual trade to a hundred billion USD per year by the end of the decade.
Additionally agreed to reshape their strategic cooperation. Although Russia remains India's primary exporter of arms, this role has reduced over the past decade as India works to broaden its supply base.
The joint statement highlighted plans for the collaborative manufacturing of sophisticated military systems, although specific reference of systems like the Su-57 fighter jet were omitted.
In conclusion, Russia and India affirmed that during the “present intricate, strained, and volatile geopolitical situation, the Indo-Russian partnership remain strong to outside forces.”
