The Japanese Economic Output Contracts as Overseas Sales Suffer by US Tariffs

Japan's economy has shown a decline for the first time in six quarters, mainly driven by weakening overseas shipments because of recent US trade duties.

Group of Seven Economic Leaderboard

The Japanese economy has become the initial G7 economy to announce an economic contraction in the latest three-month period.

With the United States still needing to publish its GDP data for Q3 2025, the present Group of Seven economic rankings show:

  • France: +0.5% expansion
  • UK: +0.1%
  • Canada: +0.1% (preliminary figure)
  • Germany: 0%
  • Italy: 0%
  • Japanese economy: -0.4%

Travel Shares Decline amid Diplomatic Dispute with China

In addition to the GDP decline, Japan is experiencing an intensifying political conflict with China concerning Taiwan.

Shares in Japanese tourism and consumer firms have dropped sharply after China urged its residents to refrain from visiting to Japan.

This move by Beijing heightened a diplomatic feud that was initiated by comments from Tokyo's new prime minister about the possibility of deploying forces in the event of a hypothetical Chinese invasion on Taiwan.

The development led to a surge of selling across Japan's tourism-related stocks.

  • The Tokyo Disneyland operator shares dropped by 5.7 percent
  • The department store chain plummeted by 11.3 percent
  • The national carrier declined by 3.75 percent

"The China-Japan tension over Taiwan and Beijing's travel warning discouraging travel to Japan introduces short-term headwinds for consumer-facing sectors.

"Tourists from China account for roughly 25 percent of Japan's inbound traffic, making retail outlets, luxury retail, and tourism services particularly at risk."

GDP Contraction Details

Japanese GDP declined by 0.4% in the July-September quarter, as manufacturers' exports were hit by tariffs levied by the United States this year.

Exports were a major factor of the decline, falling by 1.2 percent compared with the April-June quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a the same period last year.

Earlier this year, the American government had proposed Japan with a new 25% tariff on its products, which was later lowered to 15% when the two nations concluded a trade deal.

Consumer spending also declined, by 0.3 percent quarter-on-quarter.

On an annualized basis, Japan's real gross domestic product shrank by 1.8 percent in the three months through September.

"Japan's economy was strong in the initial six months of this year and the latest GDP data showed that momentum is paused temporarily.

I anticipate Japan's economy to be returning on a moderate recovery trend going forward."

The US administration has lately recognized the effect of tariffs on Americans, reducing tariffs on imported food products including beef, tomatoes, beverages and fruits amid growing concerns about rising costs.
