This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together lies a intense contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that arise in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
